Tangmere
34067 SR BB class 4-6-2 TANGMERE.
THE impressive sight of the 120-ton Pacific class steam engine Tangmere.Tangmere - named after the famous Battle of Britain aerodrome - was built in Brighton in 1948 and spent 15 years on the British Rail network. For much of this time the engine was based at the Salisbury engine shed and it was from there that it was retired from service in 1963 after completing more than a million miles on the network. It was rescued from the famous engine scrapyard at Barry after 18 years and refitted for service.Today the engine is one of the most hard-working steam engines in the UK, hauling large numbers of steam specials around the network.
